"(Don't Be Ashamed of) The Name of Abraham" is vintage 1925 sheet music
showing a statue of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, with an inset photo of
singer J.C. Flippen in a nifty straw boater. The cover illustration is
beautifully drawn in yellow and blue and signed by popular artist Albert W.
Barbelle.
Later known as Jay C. Flippen, "The Ham What Am" was a successful vaudeville
singer before going on to a long career as a character actor playing a host of
TV and movie cops and criminals, and my favorite, Rob Petrie's former mentor
Happy Spangler on "The Dick Van Dyke Show."
The song tells the story of a man telling his son to be proud of his name,
even when he is ridiculed as "Abie." Although it is never mentioned in the
lyrics, the song was probably written for a Jewish audience, and shows the
reverence the community had for Abraham Lincoln.
The song was written by Howard Johnson, Irving Bibo and Lew Klein, and
published by Ager, Yellen & Bornstein Inc. of New York. The cover says "with
ukulele arrangement" but no uke chords appear inside.
The inside front cover has samples of "Lover's Waltz" and "Big Bad Bill (Is
Sweet William Now)." The back cover is devoted to "Bits of Hits" including "I
Wonder What's Become of Sally" and "Away From You."
The folio is 6 pages including the covers and measures 9.25 x 12 inches
(23.495 x 30.48 cm). It has tanned pages, edge tears, and a crease on the front
cover. The hinge is intact. There is a stamp on the cover that reads "New
Issue."
This sheet music is complete and playable. Whether used to learn the song,
decorate a piano, frame the cover, or create an art project, this scarce piece
of vintage sheet music is a heartfelt tribute to one of the United States'
greatest presidents and a reminder to be proud of one's heritage.
